There’s something special about experiencing a destination not only as a traveler, but as a travel advisor. My recent journey aboard AmaWaterways’ Captivating Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel gave me the perfect combination of beautiful scenery, active adventures, exceptional service—and plenty of time to enjoy it all with my best friend, Jill.

Active Cruising on the Rhine

One of my favorite things about AmaWaterways is that you don't have to choose between a relaxing river cruise and an active vacation. There are so many opportunities to get out and explore.

Throughout the cruise, AmaWaterways offers complimentary guided hikes, bike tours and walking tours, making it easy to stay active while discovering each destination. And for me, the vineyard hikes were a highlight. Walking through the vineyards, surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful river views, was the perfect way to experience the Rhine Valley beyond the typical sightseeing stops.

It was also a great reminder that river cruising can be an excellent fit for travelers who want to stay active while still enjoying the comfort of unpacking just once.

Strasbourg: One of My Favorites

Strasbourg was one of my favorite stops. The combination of French and German influences, beautiful architecture, charming canals and the historic Petite France neighborhood made it a destination I could have explored for much longer.

I especially loved experiencing the city on foot. Strasbourg is one of those places where simply wandering the streets, crossing bridges and stopping to admire the architecture is part of the experience.

Life on Board

The service throughout the cruise was outstanding, and our crew made the experience feel incredibly personal. A huge part of that was our amazing cruise director, Monica. She brought so much energy, warmth and organization to the journey and made sure everything ran smoothly.

And then there was our captain—the best captain!

We actually had the distinction of being the last boat to sail through the Rhine Gorge before low water levels halted river traffic on this stretch of the Rhine. It was one of those moments that you don't necessarily appreciate until you realize just how unusual the timing was. We were incredibly fortunate to make it through and experience one of the most scenic sections of the river.

A Dinner Worth Remembering

Another highlight was AmaWaterways' Chef's Tasting Dinner. It was a fabulous dining experience and one of those evenings that reminded me how much food is part of the joy of travel. The presentation, flavors and attention to detail made it such a memorable night.

Extending the Journey to Lucerne

After disembarking in Basel, Jill and I continued our adventure with a two-night stay in Lucerne, which I booked separately from AmaWaterways at the Ameron Lucerne Hotel.

Lucerne was the perfect way to extend the trip. Beautiful Lake Lucerne, the mountains and the charming old town created a wonderful change of pace after our time on the river.

One of our favorite experiences was a day on Mount Rigi, where we combined a fabulous hike with some well-deserved relaxation at a mountain day spa. It was the perfect balance of activity and indulgence—and exactly the kind of experience I love incorporating into my clients' trips.

Why I Love This Style of Travel

This trip was a great example of why I love combining river cruising with independent stays and active experiences. The cruise provided the ease of unpacking once, excellent service, wonderful dining and a variety of included excursions, while our time in Lucerne allowed us to customize the journey even further. And doing it all with my best friend, Jill, made it even more memorable.

As a travel advisor, I believe the more I invest in learning the world, the more confidently I can help my clients discover it. This trip gave me another firsthand look at just how much you can experience on the Rhine—and how easy it can be to make a river cruise as active, relaxing or adventurous as you want it to be.
